Partió el referente inmediato del underground neoyorquino, Nick Zedd. Le despedimos recordando la entrevista que nos concedió en 2015 y que fue publicada en el número 1 de Auuuuu Fanzine.
El artista, escritor y cineasta, Nick Zedd dejó atrás este mundo y con ello el subterráneo norteamericano ha perdido uno de sus referentes. La noticia fue anunciada por su esposa Mónica Casanova en las redes sociales del artista. En días recientes diferentes publicaciones y una campaña de fondos convocada por la hija de Casanova dieron cuenta del mal estado de salud en que se encontraba Zedd, diagnosticado con cirrosis, hepatitis C y cáncer. El sábado pasado finalmente fue publicada una fotografía que, de acuerdo al pie de foto, retrata “el último respiro del rey del underground”….
Realizadores como John Waters o Amos Poe abrieron terreno a artistas inquietos y callejeros como Nick Zedd (Maryland, 8 de mayo de 1958) quien dejó su rastro en New York con el Underground Film Bulletin, publicación que editó y de la que se hizo cargo de 1984 a 1990, dando cuenta del cine clandestino. Sus libros, su filmografía transgresora y sus creaciones en la pintura lo convirtieron en un referente inmediato del bajo mundo de esa ciudad.
Nick Zedd se instaló en México desde 2011 y su presencia se hizo notar en algunos clubes, salas de cine, museos, periódicos, fanzines y radio. Musicalizó algunas noches, impartió talleres, presentó sus trabajos fílmicos, expuso su obra, dio entrevistas y conferencias.
En ese mismo año, en el Museo Británico Americano, el 24 de agosto Macabro, Festival Internacional de Cine de Horror de la Ciudad de México, organizó el Horror live Cinema con Nick poniendo rolas a la par de la exhibición de una selección de sus trabajos fílmicos de 16 mm, pelis nunca antes proyectados en este país.
Siempre estaba allí. En Museo del Chopo, en aquello de El zine invisible, una exposición dentro de la Fanzinoteca del recinto en la que mostró su archivo y trabajos en publicaciones como Underground Film Bulletin, además de realizar encargos para esta exhibición. Esa noche del 26 de junio de 2014 estuvo en las tornamesas haciendo sonar a David Bowie, The Stooges y Suicide.
Cinco meses más tarde la Secretaría de Cultura presentaría la exposición Ni son todos los que están ni están todos los que son con Nick Zedd entre la larga lista de artistas en la muestra que duraría sólo un mes en un sitio de Coyoacán.
En noviembre de 2015, El Mundano armó una Noche con Nick Zedd; en la que una conferencia, un set de viniles y un show multimedia filmográfico darían placer a los seres subterráneos.
Nuestro amigo y colaborador Daniel Lazarini presentó, por medio de su sitio P.O.V., una proyección de cinco trabajos de Nick Zedd y una conferencia el 26 de julio de 2016 en Cine Tonalá, sitio donde a finales de 2012 impartió un taller sobre Cine de Transgresión, su cine.
El ex Suicide Martin Rev visitó este país el 19 de septiembre de 2019 y compartió la noche con Mabe Fratti y Nick Zedd, quien presentó Beyond Transgression, trabajos del periodo 2011-2017 realizados en Nueva York y México. Sin embargo, el paso de James Harding por la música, más allá de las tornamesas, ya había quedado registrado desde 1999 en el siete pulgadas Consume And Die Generation Z, compartido con Zyklon Beatles para Rubric Records.
El 6 de agosto de 2015 estaba planeado presentar el primer número de Auuuuu Fanzine, teníamos el lugar, las bandas que tocarían habían dado el sí, la DJ también, y Nick, nuestro invitado, a quien ya le habíamos entrevistado para ese ejemplar de debut, decía presente… la party estaba lista pero la publicación no. Sabores y saberes estaba abarrotado, afuera Televisa grababa una telenovela y querían frenar la fiesta, adentro Belmont Witch, Colour Me Brittle, Buried Under Stars, Montclova y DJ Muppets Babies daban vida a la noche.
La entrevista para ese primer número de Auuuuu Fanzine se publicó un mes después. Es momento de recordarlo con este diálogo bizarro que es, de alguna forma, una más de sus obras.
NY has been your territory since 1976, Why México?
It was time to drop out. Do you realize that thanks to increased global warming from greenhouse emissions that bumble bees are losing their migration range at the southern and northern margins of North America? That means their habitat is shrinking. The scale and pace of these losses are unprecedented. Pollinations are vital for our food security. All responsible scientists say we must take serious steps to reduce the rate of climate change. Global warming is killing many species, including bumble bees, polar bears and butterflies, all of whom cannot shift their ranges to accomodate climate changes. Some of these species will soon become extinct as the result of carbon emissions.
Since your arrival to Mexico city, you had a lot of attention. The retrospective at Festival Macabro, You read an excerpt of your memoirs at Under the Vocano, and last year you were at El Chopo Museum with El Zine Invisible. How was the welcome?
It was fine. What’s more important is that the Obama administration gave conditional approval to allow Shell to start drilling for oil off the Alaskan Coast this summer; a devastating blow to our environmental stability considering the danger of another massive oil spill that could occur. A leaked internal document from Shell acknowledged a global temperature rise of 4 celcius due to climate change caused by fossile fuel emissions; twice the level considered safe for the planet. Thus Shell acknowledges the destruction of the human race is a rigid tenet of capitalist ideology, as fundamentalist a form of psychosis as Islam or Christianity. Capitalism is based on infinite growth while the world’s survival requires sustainability. That doesn’t matter to capitalists because of their fundamentalist belief system. We all participate in this insanity by purchasing and using petroleum based products. Meanwhile the world is being destroyed and no one is doing anything about it.
Have you been here before?
A more important question is will we evolve or will we perish?
Human industrial activity must be ended immediately since it is suicidal. Mother earth is begging for us to wake up.
Do you consider that there’s censorship in Mexico? Do you find it difficult to find places for your projections?
There is a pervasive climate of timidity and complacency in Mexico. As in NYC, there is a censorship of omission that prevents the best, most transgressive work from being seen. It is a systemic problem, reflected in the scarcity of challenging work being presented in any public forum. Such is the nature of so-called contemporary culture. I’ve always been underground which is the only place you’ll find anything new.
Do you miss working with your old friends? Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch..Are you still in contact with them?
Between Fukushima and climate collapse, the certainty of near term extinction has become the dominant issue facing all of us.
How was working with Lydia in The Wild World of Lydia Lunch?
The melting of methane hydrates in the sea beds or the thawing of arctic tundra in Siberia producing columns of methane greenhouse gases a hundred times more dangerous than carbon dioxide is a far more significant issue to consider.
How was the New York of those days when you began your work?
More relevant is that the North Pole is now warmer than it’s been in 140,000 years. This is an irreversable trend. We’ve crossed multiple tipping points.
Tell us the story of the Underground Film Bulletin.
We’re facing human extinction by the year 2030. That’s what’s producing the bizarre weather that we’re seeing all over the planet; the jet stream meandering and collapsing.
Who are your favorite directors?
It’s obvious that GMOs are poison and that fracking is not only dangerous, it’s disasterous.
Have you heard any news from John Waters?
Man’s techno fixes always make things worse. Adding chemicals to meat; the internal combustion engine that fuels the petroleum industry composed of multinational conglomerates like Exxon, Mobil, and BP who are criminal enterprises destroying the planet.
What is happening in today’s New York underground scene?
Fukushima is an unprecedented nuclear disaster. Catastrophic releases of radiation into the atmosphere and ocean took place at Fukushima with the earthquake and tsunami, causing the meltdowns of those reactors. Result: the northern hemisphere has been bathed in radiation. Tepco, the US and Japanese governments and corporate controlled media has covered this up. Infant mortality, birth defects and leukemia have soared on the West Coast of the US since Fukushima. Tepco has been dumping 3 to 400 tons of super-radioactive water into the ocean every day for 2 1/2 years and the leaks are getting worse. Do you realize that radioactive water at Fukushima has been pumping directly into the Pacific ocean for 2 1/ years?

100% of the blue fish tuna off the coast of California has tested positive for radiation. The northern Pacific ocean has been lethally poisoned.
How do you choose the music in your films?
The combined radiation if building 4 collapses at Fukushima is 85 times the amount of cesium alone that was released at Chernobyl. This is a human extinction event. Fukushima is a world problem. Every human on the planet is at risk.
